Library News

Jennings Library Learning Commons (LLC) operates just like the public library, with access for all students during the entire school day. At the teacher’s discretion, your child will have the choice to visit when he/she feels the need to do so. There is also a set LLC class time and book checkout time when the entire class will visit the library and borrow books.

We send out overdue notices twice a month as reminders. There are no fines for overdue books. The only time we will ask you to reimburse the school library is when the books are damaged or lost.

If you’d like to be informed of the activities and happy happening in our Library Commons please visit our Library Website at: https://sites.google.com/fairfieldschools.net/jenningslibrary/. This is the place where you will also find useful links to research databases and other resources we are using in school and invite you to explore at home.  During the school year, children become familiar with the resources that pertain to each grade level and learn to navigate safely and effectively on the Library Website.

We hope that we have been able to answer some of the questions you may have had regarding Jennings LLC. Of course, you may always stop in, call or email if you have any other questions or concerns.

If you would like to see our curriculum in action for all grade levels, you may wish to consider volunteering in the LLC. We would love your participation.

1st Grade Library News - January 2020

1st Grade ~ Learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in PebbleGo; reading Charter Oak Books and connecting with great literature while exploring different online features in Wixie

For the past few years we have been engaging our first graders in new and interesting literature by reading the Charter Oak Children's Book Award (COCBA) titles together during library time.

As stated on the COCBA site, the purpose of selecting 8 titles each year is to:

  • Encourage K-3 students to develop an appreciation of outstanding writing and illustrations in current picture books.

  • Promote recognition of authors and illustrators of books for children.

  • Develop critical/evaluative thinking skills by judging the literary quality of nominated titles.

  • The winner of the annual COCBA is selected by students in K through grade 3.

  • Prepares students for participation in the Nutmeg Book Award Program.

One of the titles we read so far is "Would You be My Dog" and students have researched different pets in PebbleGo and created a Wixie page with a drawing of a favorite pet and a short phrase explaining a special feature of that pet. Wixie projects are available here:

1H - Would you be my Pet?

1J - Would you be my Pet?

The second title we are reading in January is " The Astronaut Who Painted the Moon" which is inspired by the true story of astronaut Alan Bean, who was a scientist and an artist! What an inspiring story! 1st Graders have been having lots of fun and good practice taking selfies in Wixie and resizing them to fit in an astronaut costume drawing designed by our amazing artist, Ms. Lauren Grella!

1st Graders also used the Biography section in PebbleGo to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his important life work. They jotted down facts on a folded heart shaped graphic organizer that has been send home to share with the families.

We have also been practicing word wall words using SpellingCity. Each week the lists are uploaded to this site and students can practice their knowledge of the words by using the free games.

Sincerely,

Mrs. P.

Kindergarten Library News - January 2020

Kindergarten ~ Exploring and Learning with online research database, PebbleGo

In connection with the learning that takes place in the kindergarten classrooms during the non-fiction unit this winter, our Kindergartners have been using our Online Research Database, PebbleGo to learn about different kinds of dinosaurs.

The audio feature in PebbleGo makes the text available to our young researchers and helps them taking notes about the special features of the dinosaurs' bodies, diet, behavior and other interesting facts.

Kindergartners are genuinely curios and so excited to learn about dinosaurs and we can't wait to share their multimedia projects in Wixie. They are currently working on sketching their dinosaurs using the different paint tools in Wixie and we will continue introducing new features in Wixie such as background images, stickers and voice recording.

Please look out for the PebbleGo Login information coming home with your child this coming week!

Sincerely,

Mrs. P
